The Spanish Roberto Bautista and Albert Ramos they fell this Thursday in the second round of Canada’s Masters 1000 ATP, in Montreal, against the Norwegian Casper Ruud and the polish Hubert Hurkaczrespectively, after starring in two great performances, without taking the prize in the third and decisive set.
Bautista surrendered after more than three hours of battling Ruud and Ramos took Hurkcaz to the limit, before falling in the tiebreaker of the third set, close to two and a half hours into the match. The Catalan has match point at 5-4 in the third set.
Ruud, a quarterfinalist last year in Canada, came from behind to win 6-7(4), 7-6(4), 6-4 after a three-hour, 18-minute battle against the 14th-seeded Baptist in Montreal.
The Spaniard failed to reach the quarterfinals, a round he reached in 2017, 2019 and 2021.
Ruud, number 7 in the world, achieved the first victory of his career against Bautista, an opponent he had beaten in his previous two encounters, in Munich 2018 and this year’s ATP Cup.
The Norwegian will face the winner of the match between the Canadians Felix Auger-Aliassime and the british Cameron Norrie.
Albert Ramos would spring the surprise, leading Hurkacz, the eighth seed, in the third set tiebreak, without being able to crown his excellent match with a win.
He won the tiebreaker of the first set to six and, after losing with authority in the second (6-2), he directed the Pole to the end.
Finally, Hurkacz, this year’s finalist in Halle, reaffirmed the success he achieved this year in Monte Carlo by winning 7-4 in the decisive tiebreak.
The Polish player will play in the quarterfinals against the winner of the Australian derby in between Nick KyrgiosRussian executioner Daniel Medvedev Y Alex De Minaur.
