The geolocated V-16 beacon, a pioneer in Spain, could reach Europe

Date:

In 2026, our country will be the first in the entire European Union to make this signage mandatory

The Deputy Director-General for Mobility and Technology Management of the DGT,
Jorge Ordas, participated in the ‘Seminar on technical requirements and road safety of vehicles for personal mobility’, organized by the Directorate-General for Internal Market, Industry, Entrepreneurship and SMEs and by the Directorate-General for Mobility and Transport of the European Commission. The aim of this workshop, in which representatives from the Netherlands, France, Germany and Spain participated, was to exchange with authorities and stakeholders the national regulations introduced to regulate the safety and use of vehicles for personal mobility, as well as best share practices to find the best way to incorporate common standards.

One of the topics discussed was the groundbreaking Spanish initiative of the geolocated V-16 light, as in 2026 our country will be the first in the entire European Union to make this signaling mandatory. It is an important topic for the group, who share concerns about the high risk of pedestrians being run over at the time of
signage of an accident.

Last year 26 people died after getting out of their vehicles on interurban roads and the trend indicates that this figure will continue to grow, so the Commission will study a solution. Luxembourg, for example, has already abolished the use of triangles and welcomes the Spanish initiative.

For all this, the group recognizes the innovative character of the V16 beacon, which is not only
will be visible at 1,000 meters instead of the 100 currently requiredbut, moreover, it avoids the danger of going outside to place it, replacing a risk by a gesture, which guarantees the setting of the light and in any case its visibility, even in adverse weather conditions.

At a regulatory level, the Royal Decree 159/2021, which regulates roadside assistance services, which is already in the Council of State, will be amended, published in the BOE and with that all administrative procedures have been completed. In addition, it is foreseeable that the connected beacons will come on the market at the end of this year, which will be mandatory from January 1, 2026. Until that day, the triangles, the non-connected V-16 or the connected ones.

For Ordás “it is a good practice that will facilitate both the management of road accidents and their prevention, which is why we believe that its implementation should be extended to the rest of the Member States of the European Union.”
