Land Rover Range Rover: superlative in every way

Date:

Land Rover’s Coventry assembly lines are working hard to meet demand for the new Range Rover, one of the first models to bring luxury and refinement to off-roaders.

only in Spain,
orders have doubled – from 150 to about 300 – and while the Range Rover will never become a high-volume model, as it is a car starting at 140,950 euros, this is good news for the English brand.

Closer to Rolls-Royce than Jeep, the new off-roader exudes opulence from every angle and is designed to give everyone who rides it a feeling of power. To do it on winding mountain roads, it is necessary to change your mindset and do it with courage and poise, without thinking about size or giving priority: the others will leave.

Those roads, however, are the perfect place to really show what kind of car it is. It is heavy because it accelerates quickly on slopes. It is manoeuvrable, as the directional rear axle gives it a tight turning circle (compared to its predecessor). It is powerful, as its engines start at 350 horsepower. It is stable, because it has air suspension.

Beneath that layer of luxury and refinement – inside it’s all leather, brushed aluminum and wood – lies a very capable off-roader, with all the features you’ve come to expect from the brand, such as trailer off-road, wade or cruise mode. Still, it will rarely be used off the tarmac, but it will be relegated to Belgravia’s most select streets in London, Dubai or Puerto Banús.

It’s inevitable to look back and compare it to its predecessors, vehicles with a utilitarian soul – despite being seen in the field, Range Rovers were never cheap – and see how much they’ve changed from one another. One of the most notable is the suspension, which was much softer in the second generation but was unavoidable to make the Range wobbly machines cornering.

It is important for Land Rover to win back its select audience, especially after the death of its greatest ambassador, Queen Elizabeth II of England. Associated with English luxury and sophistication, this next step in its journey is decidedly futuristic.

This is underlined by the plug-in hybrid powertrains – the same as those available on the Range Rover Sport – which have an electric range of around 80km, which will be even greater when the 100% electric model arrives in 2024.
