R5 Turbo 3-e, a spectacular electric show car for drifting

Date:

That was the promise Renault made in January 2022 to launch the 50th anniversary of Renault 5, one of its greatest icons. After numerous festive events (participation in
Historic Monte Carlo Rallyor, Rétromobile, Le Mans Classic, etc.) and the presentation of the Renault 5 Diamant electric show car, the brand has unveiled the R5 TURBO 3rd concept car.

As part of the celebrations of the
Renault 50th birthday 5, this 100% electric show car pays a contemporary tribute to its most legendary sports versions, Renault 5 Turbo and Turbo 2. It is called R5 TURBO 3E, with a “3” to mark the next Turbo 2 and an “E” to mark its electric to symbolize motorization.

R5 TURBO 3E is a new example, after Renault 5 Prototype, the “electric revival” of an emblematic model of the brand. Renault is electrifying its history to prepare for its 100% electric future in Europe on the 2030 horizon.

This reinterpretation of the Renault 5 Turbo 2 combines
a spectacular aesthetic with high-level features. R5 TURBO 3E is a new example, after Renault 5 Prototype, the “electric revival” of an emblematic model of the brand. Renault is electrifying its history to prepare for its 100% electric future in Europe on the 2030 horizon.

This reinterpretation of the Renault 5 Turbo 2 combines spectacular aesthetics with high-level performance. Dedicated to performance and the track, the R5 TURBO 3E is a rear-wheel drive electric drifter. Like its iconic predecessor, it’s a strict two-seater, with the rear occupied by the drivetrain: two electric motors driving each of the wheels, with the batteries under the floor.

Mounted on a tubular chassis, protected by a flat bottom and surrounded by safety arches approved by the International Automobile Federation (FIA), the mechanics of the R5 TURBO 3E have a total power of 280 kW (380 CV) and a torque of 700 nm

This new generation “bomb” is able to cover 100 meters from the start in just 3.5 seconds (3.9 seconds in drift mode) and reaches
a maximum speed of 200 km/h. The battery capacity of 42 kWh allows for a drift session or a gymkhana. In the latter case, it can avoid obstacles in an exemplary way thanks to a steering angle of the wheels of more than 50°.

To make driving easier, the R5 TURBO 3E has a dozen mounting brackets for cameras, both indoors and outdoors. For example, they can be found where your headlights and door mirrors are – perfect places to get the best images from your drifting sessions.

The result is spectacular. The hood, doors and passenger compartment are clearly reminiscent of its predecessor, although they are now made of carbon fiber. Also R5 TURBO 3E
inherits the iconic air intakes of Renault 5 Turbo 2 in the rear wings, with a width of 2.02 meters (25 centimeters more than a Turbo 2). The length is 4 meters and the height is 1.32 meters. One of the most striking elements is the rear spoiler, which makes it possible to increase the downward force on the driving wheels, even in the most extreme skids.
