Launch: MG4 Electric stands out for its striking design, its 450 km autonomy and its advanced connectivity thanks to the MSP platform
Agility in aluminum and steel, the new MG4 Electric will hit the European market in autumn 2022. Thanks to its distinctive and sporty appearance, it attracts nothing but admiring glances. The appeal of the C-segment hatchback E-car comes from a striking bonnet influenced by LED headlights and sharp lines, a lively multi-layered rear and a two-tone roof with refined aerodynamics. The MG4 Electric will be the first MG model based on the new MSP (Modular Scalable Platform). The electrically operated hatch has a fresh look.
MG Motor follows a clear strategy for vehicle design. Each model has been developed to harmonize with the preferences of the relevant target group, while retaining the key features of the MG Motor family. “For nearly a century, MG Motor has been developing innovative cars for young customers, even in today’s era of pure electric vehicles,” said Shao Jingfeng, Global Design Director, SAIC Motor Passenger Vehicle Company. “The task of designers is how to embody the brand concept and values with smart products for the outside world. With this mission in mind, we engaged our global design studios: the SAIC Design Center in Shanghai and the Advanced Design Studio in London. We also work with the Royal College of Art and other institutions,” says Jingfeng.
The MG4 Electric immediately impresses with its characteristic hood. In addition to the eye-catching headlamps, the sloping vertical turn signals create a lively appearance as part of the dynamic lines above the front splitter. Daytime running lights with no less than 28 LEDs that form six vertical fiber optic stripes ensure a clear front design. High and low beam in three reflective shells on each side, combined with LED turn signals, create a truly electric car image.
The influence of these lines continues on the multi-layered back through the diversified design of corresponding light edges. A double-wing rear spoiler highlights the two-tone roof and its refined aerodynamics, while optically extending the line of the entire car and improving airflow at the rear. Intricate LED taillights contrast against the sculpted sidelines. With their 172 LEDs, they are the highlight at the rear of the MG4 Electric.
The MG4 Electric offers a simple and user-friendly interior where the pleasant atmosphere shows the influence of technology. The interior has been designed to maximize the available space with sleek, lightweight instrument panels and controls, using quality materials and careful installation, while emphasizing the core principles of simplicity, technology and quality of the MG4 Electric. The floating design of the center console creates more space and integrates useful functions such as storage space for smartphones. The four-way adjustable double-spoke steering wheel with minimalistic designed control buttons also follows this principle.
The pre-production MG4 Electric model already on display uses orange accent colours, while its black and white camouflaged counterpart is currently on 120,000 kilometers of final testing across Europe. Then the MG4 Electric with its European market launch this fall will add a touch of electric car color. The MG4 Electric is available in the following color schemes: Pebble Black, Dover White, Medal Silver, Andean Grey, Diamond Red, Brighton Blue and Fizzy Orange.
The MG4 Electric is MG Motor’s most advanced vehicle to date. The battery allows up to 450 kilometers of WLTP autonomy, but is currently the thinnest in the industry at 110 millimeters. With rear-wheel drive and a 50:50 weight distribution, MG Motor also had in mind a vehicle with particularly agile driving dynamics. With an Advanced Driving Assistance (MG Pilot system) and a ‘Zero Thermal Runaway’ safety concept, passenger protection is paramount. And comfort is not neglected either, for example with highly advanced connectivity solutions as standard. The basis for this is the new MSP platform, on which the MG4 Electric’s first MG model is based.
The low height of the car is made possible by the extremely discharged battery. Smart modular architecture offers many advantages in terms of flexibility, space utilization, safety, driving experience, weight savings and advanced technologies. The scalable design can accommodate wheelbases from 2,650 to 3,100mm, allowing different body styles to be designed for different segments on the same platform, from hatchbacks and sedans to SUVs and vans. The modular scalable platform therefore plays an important role in MG’s growth strategy for Europe.
The ‘One pack’ is a battery with an innovative design. With its landscape battery cell arrangement, the minimum battery height can reach an industry-leading 110mm, resulting in a significant increase in the effective use of space. Together with the redesign of the associated cooling system, the ‘One pack’ battery offers three key benefits: ultra-high integration, ultra-long life and zero thermal runaway safety protection. For example, the new MG4 Electric benefits from battery design and has a class lead in terms of interior space, weight and safety. Due to its new architecture, the MG4 Electric offers more interior space within the same exterior dimensions.
