Petrol or diesel, which car to choose at full fuel increase

Date:

Diesel is the fuel that has risen the most in price so far this year, creating an unusual situation where the price of diesel is higher than that of gasoline. Today they are listed in the EU Oil Bulletin at 1,971 and 1,759 euros respectively, making it easy to find a liter of diesel for more than 2 euros at hundreds of gas stations in Spain.

This year, the price of diesel has risen by 46.5% so far this year — petrol has risen by 19.1% — which has had a significant impact on road transport and agricultural activities and impacting prevailing inflation.

Furthermore, the price development
expected to increasesince more heating oil is produced in winter, reducing the share of transport and thus increasing the price.

Diesel cars have always been an interesting alternative for buyers who prioritized fuel economy in the annual calculation.
Engines are slightly more expensive and more complex to repairbut throughout their lifetime they eventually balanced out with cost.

To check whether buying a diesel car at these prices is still a good idea, a modern car with both technologies is essential for comparison. The Peugeot 308, whose commercial launch was this year, is the perfect candidate.

In its simplest version, the 308 with its 130 hp Puretech petrol engine
it costs 26,300 euroswhile the most affordable diesel engine
amounts to 30,350 —also available in combination with the EAT8 automatic gearbox—. Their consumption is respectively 5.5 and 4.9 liters per 100 km and both have a tank of 52 liters.

For example, filling the fuel tank for each, according to EU official prices, is 91.52 euros for petrol and 102.44 euros for diesel. Taking into account that
the average Spanish driver drives 12,500 kilometers per yearand that these engines have a range of 945.5 km and 1061 km in each tank, the petrol would consume 686.8 liters of fuel per year, while the diesel would consume 612.7 liters.

Although at first glance it may seem obvious that the diesel engine makes more sense in terms of consumption, it must be translated into euros. In monetary terms,
would mean an annual amount — maintaining the fuel price set today — from
1.208.8 and 1.207 euros for the petrol and diesel cars respectively. A difference of less than two euros.

Taking into account the difference of 4,050 euros between the two models, it would be
match the amount in just 2,250 years. Today, with a constant fuel price, the cheapest option is the gasoline propellant.
