The automated systems
speed control and the use of seat belts significantly improve effectiveness in enforcing compliance with both city and highway limits.
According to data updated in May 2022, the DGT radar networkIt has 514 fixed radars1,325 mobile radars and 92 section radars evenly distributed throughout the Spanish geography.
Section speed cameras are a way of controlling speed, not at specific kilometer points, as fixed speed cameras do, but on sections of road stretching over several kilometres. The first started in 2010 in the Guadarrama tunnel, on the A-6. In reality, this kind of surveillance
does not work with radarsbut with artificial vision cameras, similar to those penalized at traffic lights in some cities, according to the DGT.
The controlled speed sections of the road are equipped with artificial vision cameras. They are located at both ends of the section and calculate the
average speed of any vehicle and penalizes those who exceed the limit.
To warn drivers of the proximity of a controlled speed section, this is signaled in advance with the associated panel.
Actually, they are not actual ‘radars’, such as cinemometers. It is a system of cameras that record continuously, the license plate of each vehicle is identified at the entrance and exit of the stage. A computer
match the same license platescheck the passing times and calculate the average speed of the vehicle.
When the average speed of the course is below the limit, there is no violation. But if the average speed of the ride exceeds the limit, the violation complaint will be processed.
The fines for exceeding the indicated speed on a section of a given road are the same as those for the met
fixed and mobile radars. For example, the traffic law sets a light fine of 100 euros without deducting points from the driving license for those who drive faster than 30 km/h on interurban roads, where the section radars are set.
If the speed indicated by these radars exceeds the maximum allowed speed between 31 and 50 km/h, the fine is 300 euros and 2 points on the license. for the excesses
that exceed between 51 and 60 km/h the amount of the fine is 400 euros and 4 points from the card; and for those who exceed the speed limit between 61 and 70 km/h, 500 euros and 6 points will be dropped.
The most serious cases, now considered a crime against road safety, are for those exceeding the speed limit by 80 km/h on interurban roads and 60 km/h on urban roads. Then
there is a fine of 600 euros, six points of the card and penalties will be charged for a crime for which he will have to answer in court. These penalties, as stated in the Penal Code, are “imprisonment of three to six months or a fine of six to 12 months or community service of 31 to 90 days. And in any case the deprivation of the right to drive motor vehicles and mopeds for a period of more than one to a maximum of four years.
