Why there are more and more section radars

Date:

The General Directorate of Traffic currently has 780 fixed radars, 1,325 mobile radars and 92 section radars spread throughout Spain. This is the latest data the agency has published in 2022, although their idea is
increase the number by several hundred more in the coming years.

In the month of May, the DGT announced that it would deploy 34 camouflaged motorcycles on Spanish roads in an effort to reduce the number of accidents, which seem to be on the rise despite the introduction of the
new traffic and road safety law in March with the same intention.

Now Traffic is doubling its efforts and in the last Council of Ministers, EUR 14 million was approved to control the speed of motorists, with 46 new checkpoints to be placed throughout the territory, without taking into account the
Basque Country or Cataloniatransferred those powers.

These will be deployed in 2023, 20 of which will be the well-known photobooths; 10 fixed radars and 16 sections, which are more deterrent and effective than the traditional ones.

This is precisely the reason for the proliferation of section radars. they are more effective and their action makes it more difficult to give a justification
for a possible appeal. When measuring the average speed on a given road section and after eliminating the margin of 20 extra km to overtake, if the section radar registers a figure of more than 90 km, it means that at some point in the section we limit have exceeded maximum allowed speed. And we can’t claim to have conquered it to catch up.

The controlled speed sections of the road are equipped with artificial vision cameras. They are located at both ends of the section and calculate the average speed of each vehicle and
punish those who exceed the limit.

To warn drivers of the proximity of a controlled speed section, this is signaled in advance with the associated panel.

Actually, they are not actual ‘radars’, such as cinemometers. It is a system of cameras that record continuously, identifying the number plate of each vehicle
the entrance and exit of the section. A computer correlates the identical license plates, checks passing times and calculates the vehicle’s average speed.

When the average speed of the course is below the limit, there is no violation. But if the average speed of the ride exceeds the limit, the violation complaint will be processed.

In 2021 the State
444 million euros in fines introduced9% more – the figure is estimated to rise this year – and 2.2 million of the 4.8 million sanctions came from fixed radars, while 863,000 of the rest came from mobile radars.
