Renault Megane E-TECH, ‘Primus inter pares’

The diamond brand’s new electric model retains the DNA that has made each generation of this model a benchmark in the segment

Renault has more than ten years of experience in designing, manufacturing, selling and monitoring electric vehicles to keep up with the new trend of the electric revolution with the Mégane E-TECH. The diamond brand’s new electric model retains the DNA that has made each generation of Mégane a benchmark in the segment, thanks to its dynamism, habitability and boot space. We have to add new virtues to this, such as an attractive design, an unprecedented size-to-habitability ratio and the one hundred percent electric motorization.

The Mégane E-TECH is available in two power versions: 130 hp and 250 newton meters of torque or 220 hp and 300 newton meters. With the battery with a capacity of 40 kWh, it has a range of 300 kilometers, while mounting the battery extends from 60 kWh to 470 kilometers. The maximum speed (electronically limited) with the 130 hp engine is 150 km/h, while 100 km/h is reached from the start in just 10 seconds. The 220 hp EV 60 model has a top speed of 160 kilometers, while it can accelerate from 0 to 100 km/h in just 7.4 seconds. The batteries have a warranty of 8 years or 160,000 km. In this time interval, they will be replaced for free if they degrade to a level below 70% of their rated capacity.

Thanks to the new 4.21 meter long body, the Mégane E-TECH Electric offers plenty of interior space and dynamics on the road, thanks to a longer wheelbase (2.70 meters) and smaller overhangs. The great fineness of the battery (only 11 centimeters thick) has made it possible to refine the exterior proportions and increase the ratio of exterior dimensions to interior habitability, while lowering the center of gravity to provide more stability to the whole. The luggage compartment offers a total volume of 440 liters, with an additional 22 liters of space accessible through the double floor, which is available as an accessory. To increase the load volume, the rear seats can be folded down and the front passenger seat can be folded vertically.

The impression of robustness of the body is conveyed thanks to the presence of details reminiscent of the world of SUVs: large 20-inch wheels, floor and wheel arch guards and a high waistline. All versions have recessed door handles. When the driver or front passenger reaches out to open a door, or when the car is unlocked, the hidden levers in the bodywork pop out automatically, via an electrical system. They return to their closed position after parking for two minutes, when the car begins to move forward or when the doors are closed.

The new electric Mégane stands out for its livability and practicality, thanks to its longer wheelbase, flat floor, smaller engine compartment and slimmer dashboard. In addition, the lack of a transmission tunnel, gear lever and control panel, normally integrated into the center console, increases the space on board.

In terms of safety measures, it is equipped with innovative systems, such as the highway and traffic assistant, the adaptive cruise control with the lane centering function or the intelligent speed limiter, which allows you to automatically block the maximum speed of the vehicle according to the current legal limitation. To reduce the risk of a collision, the new electric Mégane E-Tech also features Lane Departure Warning, Blind Spot Warning and Lane Keeping Assist, which combines data from the front camera and side radars to automatically return the vehicle to its original position. lane when, when overtaking, it detects a risk of a frontal or side collision or when the car is about to leave the road.

The new Mégane E-TECH introduces a new electric power steering system with a higher reduction ratio for more agile and direct steering. Thus, the driver reacts faster and more clearly to his touches on the steering wheel, which facilitates manoeuvring. This advantage also includes the presence of a multi-link rear axle linked to the new steering column, which guarantees better stability and more precise steering. The proposed settings concern driving sensations (steering force, engine tuning and throttle response) as well as the on-board environment (ambient lighting, driver’s seat comfort, thermal comfort, instrument panel display, instrument panel colour).

Three preset modes (Eco, Comfort and Sport) combine the best of these settings and their respective objectives are efficiency, balance adapted to the most common situations and amplification of dynamic sensations. A fourth mode (My Sense) allows free choice for adjusting settings. The electric Mégane E-Tech also stands out for its quick response to the different Eco, Comfort and Sport driving modes.

Like a smartphone, the new electric Mégane integrates into the user’s digital ecosystem, with its innovative Open R display system and the Open R Link multimedia system, developed with Google and based on the Android Automotive operating system. In addition to Google Maps navigation and the Google Play app catalog, the built-in Google voice assistant and My Renault app features add even more interactivity.

The new optional Open R display for the Mégane combines the digital display on the instrument panel and the multimedia display on the center console, forming an inverted ‘L’. The surface of the screen is covered with reinforced glass, improving its robustness and making it more pleasant to the touch and to the eye, and offers a total viewing area that has never been seen before: 321 cm² for the 12.3-inch screen in the instrument panel and 453 cm² for the 12-inch multimedia screen. The result is a total of 774 cm² for a unique on-board digital space in the category.
