For sale from 37,200 euros, with a 5-year warranty or 100,000 km
The first SsangYong Rexton arrived in Spain in 2002. The proud buyers then boasted that they had a real SUV “like a Mercedes, but with a better price”, they said, claiming that the car was equipped with the same engine as the star’s signature, although this was only a half-truth , as the engine itself was a Mercedes design, but it was manufactured in Korea by SsangYong himself.
20 years have passed and the Rexton is reaching its fifth generation. It is a more refined car, it is available with five seats for five adults (although it is true that they travel in the third row with their legs in an elevated position), and it retains its good qualities both as a highway and highway driver and as a one step off the asphalt and practice driving 4X4. It is also supported by more than 20,000 units sold since the first generation in Spain.
It’s true that the family 4X4 segment (be careful, it’s not an SUV, it’s a real all-terrain vehicle) is not the segment that monopolizes the most sales in the market. But in recent years it has kept its quota almost unchanged, with a public that needs a big, familiar car, with a capable trunk, and most importantly a gearbox and dimensions to penetrate beyond the poorly paved tracks.
The Rexton more than meets all these requirements and, moreover, if we compare it with its possible current rivals (Mercedes-Benz GLS, Land Rover Defender, BMW X5) the price is about 20,000 euros lower. If we look at the frontrunner, the Toyota Land Cruiser, the Japanese model also surpasses the Korean by about 10,000 euros.
We have already been able to test the new Rexton, both on the road and on the highway, on a route between Madrid and Sigüenza, but also on a 4X4 track. And in both conditions, the car meets all requirements, and very well.
Technically, the Rexton has rear-wheel drive or a linkable 4X4, with a reduction gear as standard on all finishes, and the option to lock the rear differential at the top of the range. It uses a 202 hp 2.2-litre diesel engine, mated to an AT8 automatic gearbox, one gear more than the previous generation model. Despite the power gains, this automatic transmission and aerodynamics help maintain or slightly reduce fuel consumption, which amounts to an average of 7.7 l/100 km. In Spain, petrol versions will not be marketed and there will be no electrified engines.
On the road it is not particularly heavy, and that is a car of 4.85 meters long. It is quiet and responds perfectly when pressing the accelerator to move at legal speeds.
Outside the asphalt we find a very correct behavior again. In addition to the four-wheel drive and elements like the descent control, some dimensions of 20.5 degrees of attack angle, 20.0 degrees ventral angle and 22.0 degrees departure, with a height to the ground of 224 millimeters. Despite the equipment of road tires, during the test the car was able to overcome all obstacles without major setbacks.
On the outside, the completely redesigned and widened grille with a three-dimensional effect stands out, with more stylized headlamps, with a longitudinal design that exudes sobriety and elegance. In addition to the headlights, the bumpers are also new.
The interior of the vehicle has also been completely renovated. It offers great comfort for the driver and passengers, with high-quality materials and finishes and a new center console with electronic controls to operate the gearbox, a flattened steering wheel at the bottom and a large TFT LCD digital screen as a dashboard. , full color and customizable.
In terms of safety, the new Rexton’s equipment leaves no one indifferent, up to 9 airbags, autonomous emergency braking system, lane assistant, high beam control, blind spot detection system, lane change collision warning, Rear Cross Traffic Assist, Secure Parking Exit Warning and numerous preventive safety systems.
