The new Honda CRF300L has a robust, responsive single-cylinder engine and a six-speed transmission controlled by a slipper clutch
The essence of what makes a mixed engine a true dual-use has long been in Honda’s DNA. Launched in the late 1970s, the XL250S was a motorcycle that offered real efficiency on tarmac and outstanding off-road performance. The entire XL range that followed became legendary and proved that by combining a fuel-efficient and easy-to-use single-cylinder four-stroke engine with an efficient chassis, it was possible to create a motorcycle that was usable, versatile and, as riders all over the world were discovering. , world, very funny
The first was to look at customer needs. While some riders are looking for competition-level off-road performance, many others value ease of use, functionality and comfort. For weekdays in urban environments, they are looking for a robust, practical bike with cutting-edge off-road styling. But on the weekend you need to be ready to travel wherever you want to go, on or off the road.
Honda’s new mixed engine has always been viewed from a global perspective by the development team. Not only did it have to have a powerful and economical engine, the chassis also had to be able to cover a wide range of applications. And it had to be affordable, offer high quality and excellent value for money, prioritizing low operating costs.
And Honda engineers found the right formula. The CRF250L proved to be a fruitful base platform that, in addition to spawning a RALLY version, was a consistent best-seller around the world. The CRF300L’s new engine, which received more displacement in the 2020 model, also included a slipper clutch. The weight of the chassis was reduced making it 4 kg lighter, the driving position was revised, the seat and tank were narrowed and a positive LCD instrument panel was incorporated.
With no mechanical changes for the 2023 model, with a new paint option and standard handguards, the CRF300L remains a true all-rounder.
The CRF300L’s 286 cc single-cylinder engine develops 20.1 kW and 26.6 Nm. The ratios of 1st to 5th are short to improve response and acceleration, while 6th is long for more relaxed high-speed cruising. A slipper clutch controls the rear wheel on hard downshifts and provides a smooth feel on the lever.
A careful balance of stiffness between the steel frame, aluminum swingarm and lower triple clamp provides excellent feel and feedback to the rider. The steering geometry provides stability and agility, while the long-travel front and rear suspension provides comfortable shock absorption and generous ground clearance.
