Always loyal to the driver

The new Lexus RZ 450e has an approved final consumption of 16.83 kWh per 100 kilometers, enabling a range of 440 kilometers on a full charge

The RZ 450e is a new battery-electric SUV, the first Lexus vehicle to be developed from the ground up to be exclusively electric and to realize the exciting potential of new technologies that enhance performance and driving pleasure, true to the Lexus philosophy Electrified.

The brand has ensured that the vehicle always remains true to the driver’s intentions, so that being behind the wheel is both comfortable and exciting. Trying to make driving as natural as possible, with maximum vehicle fidelity to the driver’s actions, thanks to the optional One Motion Grip steering system, which combines a new Steering Yoke steering wheel with a Steer-by-Wire steering system, an industry first car world and the precise control of DiRect4 all-wheel drive.

The new Lexus RZ 450e has an approved final consumption of 16.83 kWh per 100 km, which enables a range of 440 km on a full charge (WLTP mixed cycle). With these updated values, the RZ further establishes itself as a powerful competitor in the segment.

First and foremost, the RZ is a Lexus and retains the best performance and craftsmanship qualities associated with the brand. In addition, it includes an advanced transmission called Direct4, which combines the use of two e-axles on the front and rear axles with independent torque control between the axles. It also has an optional One Motion Grip system, which combines the new Steering Yoke steering wheel with a Steer-by-Wire steering system.

The RZ has four-wheel drive via two e-axles. It is a compact modular assembly consisting of a motor, gears and an ECU, which is located between the drive wheels. The RZ uses two independent e-axles front and rear, which work in tandem with the Direct4 four-wheel drive control system to adjust the vehicle’s position, traction and power distribution to suit driving conditions.

The e-axles are quiet, efficient and deliver just the right amount of power. The front engine delivers 150 kW and the rear engine 80 kW, for a total power of 230 kW (313 hp). Both have superior power density, thanks to the optimized rotor and inducer design. The compact dimensions also contribute to the compactness of the vehicle, allowing more space in the passenger compartment and trunk and to house the EV battery.

The RZ uses a lithium-ion battery in a set consisting of 96 cells, with a total capacity of 71.4 kW. It is located completely below the passenger compartment and is an integral part of the platform. Its position also helps lower the vehicle’s center of gravity. The new RZ has a range of 440 km (WLTP mixed cycle).

Thanks to the attention paid to key factors such as vehicle weight optimization, battery power and performance, the RZ has a consumption of 16.83 kWh per 100 km, making the RZ one of the most efficient BEVs on the market, a surprising figure for its performance characteristics and size.

The One Motion Grip system, which combines a new Steering Yoke steering wheel with a new Steer-by-Wire steering, is one of the key new technologies in the new Lexus RZ. There is no mechanical linkage or the traditional steering column; instead, an electrical connection is used to send signals from the steering wheel to the wheels. The result is instant response and more precise control. The One Motion Grip system includes a new Steering Yoke wheel, which replaces the traditional wheel. Steer-by-Wire technology requires less effort from the driver: only a 150-degree turn is needed to make a full left or right turn, avoiding hand-over-hand turns. The new Steering Yoke steering wheel gives the driver a better view of the instrument panel and the road ahead. Lexus designers took advantage of this aspect to position the gauges higher and farther back than would have been possible with a conventional steering wheel, reducing the need for the driver to adjust their field of view.
