With the arrival of the new year, motorists will have to get used to new rules and especially traffic signs, as the General Traffic Regulations updates them with a new design, amends some existing ones and deletes those already out of use.
According to the DGT, this change is taking place with the aim of adapting to the new times of society and the emergence of new means of transport, such as Personal Mobility Vehicles (VMP).
personal mobility vehicles, the use of private cars versus public transport in the post-Covid era, and that the pedestrian is gaining ground in cities.
Recently adopted measures include the speed limit for vehicles,
that drops from 50 to 30 km/h on most streets of all cities in Spain from May 11, 2021, as this reduction will affect one-way roads or one lane in each direction, meaning drivers will lose points in the driver’s license if they are rushed from 51 km/h.
According to the Royal Decree amending the General Traffic Regulations, still in draft, e.g.
the STOP signal is updatedthat of pedestrian crossings, that of danger signals due to fog and that of proximity to a school zone, among others.
The so-called axis
R-118, whose purpose is to indicate the prohibition of access of electric scooters to a certain area, will be one of the new signs. Next to it is P-35, indicating the proximity of a braided section where vehicles will share the same space at a fork with an entry lane and an exit lane. The signals S-1b and S-2b are also included, which indicate the presence of a multi-lane road.
For their part, all elements of the end prohibition signs become black instead of grey, for better visualization on a white background.
P-35. Danger from the proximity of a section between a confluence and a fork where several lane changes are caused by vehicles crossing their lane and therefore increase the risk of collision.
Q-24a. Danger due to the proximity of a place where the road can often be crossed by wild animals, a very significant proportion of which are wild boar.
P-33. Danger due to the proximity of an area where circulation is often impeded by significant loss of visibility due to fog, rain, snow, smoke, etc.
P-21b. Danger due to the proximity of a place frequented by the elderly, such as a retirement home, a home, etc.
R-118. Prohibition of access to personal mobility vehicles.
R-120. Ban on access to vehicles based on their environmental sticker or other established environmental criteria. The conditions are specified on an S-860 companion panel or on a board where the board is included.
S-1c. Indicates the start of a 2+1 road, i.e. a road consisting of three lanes and allowing traffic in both directions. The center lane is intended to facilitate overtaking and is alternately reserved for both directions of travel. This sign can also indicate the branch of a fork leading to a 2+1 road.
R-422. Obligation for bicycle users to continue on foot. If this obligation is limited to certain periods, this will be indicated by means of an additional panel.
There will also be many signals that will no longer be active. For example the plates
R-308a, R-308b and R-309 indicating the ban on parking on odd, even and limited use days.
