Red Bull Powertrains and Ford to collaborate to develop next-generation hybrid powertrain to power Oracle Red Bull Racing and Scuderia AlphaTauri teams from 2026 to at least 2030
After more than two decades, Ford returns to Formula 1. The iconic American carmaker and Red Bull Powertrains enter into a long-term strategic and technical alliance to develop the next-generation hybrid power unit for use in Formula 1. 2026.
Red Bull Ford Powertrains will supply engines to the Oracle Red Bull Racing and Scuderia AlphaTauri teams from 2026 to at least 2030. “This marks the beginning of an exciting new chapter in Ford motorsport history, which began when my great-grandfather won a career that helped launch our company,” said
Bill Ford, DIRECTOR. “Ford returns to the pinnacle of the sport alongside world champions Oracle and Red Bull Racing, bringing its long history of innovation, sustainability and electrification to one of the world’s most visible podiums.”
From 2023, Ford and Red Bull Powertrains will work on the development of the power source that will be part of the new technical regulations. This includes having a 350kW electric motor and a new internal combustion engine capable of supporting 100% renewable fuels, ready for the 2026 season.
“Ford’s return to Formula 1 with Red Bull Racing reflects where we are going as a company: we are focusing on modern, increasingly electric and software-based vehicle experiences and vehicles,” he said.
Jim Farley, Chairman and CEO of Ford Motor Company. “F1 will be an incredibly profitable platform to innovate, exchange ideas and technologies and connect with tens of millions of new customers.”
Ford will deploy its technical expertise in all areas where it can add value to the World Championship-leading team. The areas that will be explored together are the development of the internal combustion engine and key developments in electric motor and battery cell technology, drive unit control software and analytics.
“It is fantastic to welcome Ford back to Formula 1 through this alliance,” he said.
Christian Horner, director and CEO of the Oracle Red Bull Racing team. “As an independent engine manufacturer, we can benefit from the expertise of an OEM [fabricante de equipo original] because Ford puts us in a good position relative to the competition. Ford is a manufacturer with a rich motoring history that spans generations. From Jim Clark to Ayrton Senna and Michael Schumacher, their lineage speaks for itself. For us as Red Bull Powertrains, it is extremely exciting to open the next chapter of that dynasty as Red Bull Ford. The year 2026 is still a long way off, but for us the work has already started with our eyes set on a new future and the further evolution of Oracle Red Bull Racing.”
Ford is investing $50 billion to lead the electric vehicle revolution worldwide. Fueled by the success of the F-150 Lightning and Mustang Mach-E, it is the number two electric vehicle manufacturer in the US and is a leader in many markets around the world with E-Transit. Ford is working to meet growing consumer demand and, under its Ford+ plan, reach global annual production of 600,000 electric vehicles by the end of this year and 2 million by the end of 2026.
In fact, by 2026, Ford will be the only manufacturer participating in disciplines ranging from motorsport to Formula 1, through the WEC and IMSA, including the 24 Hours of Le Mans with the Mustang GT3, the World Rallying with MSport Ford’s Puma Hybrid Rally1, the Baja 1000 with the Ranger Raptor and Bronco, and NASCAR, NHRA and Supercars with the Mustang. Ford continues to enhance its racing efforts to accelerate the introduction of innovations, next-generation technologies and consumer software, and will continue to do so for its future electric vehicles through this new partnership at the pinnacle of motorsport.
“We are entering an exciting new era for Ford Performance,” said Farley. “We will fight to win in F1, the greatest exponent of motorsport, with Red Bull Racing. We will see the world’s most popular sports coupe, the Mustang, take part in many tests; from the base models to the Australian Super Cars, through NASCAR and Le Mans. In addition, we will consolidate our off-road leadership in the World Rally Championship, the King of Hammers, the Baja 100 and many other competitions. At the same time, we will continue to surprise the world with great demo models such as the SuperVan 4 and the Mustang Mach-E 1400.”
