The Spanish Data Protection Agency (AEPD) has officially launched a preliminary investigation against the American company OpenAI, owner of the generative artificial intelligence service ChatGPT, for possible violation of regulations.
The agency recalls in a statement that it advocates the development and implementation of innovative technologies such as artificial intelligence “respectfully” to current legislation, as it believes that “only from this starting point can technological development compatible with people’s rights and freedoms take place”.
In this regard, the agency reports that last week at the European Data Protection Board (EDPB) to include the ChatGPT service as a topic to be addressed in their plenary session.
In the opinion of the organism, the global treatments that can have “a huge impact” on the rights of individuals require harmonized and coordinated actions at European level in application of the General Data Protection Regulation.
The above-mentioned committee has decided during next Thursday’s plenary session to set up a working group to promote cooperation and exchange information on the actions of the data protection authorities, the AEPD explains.
