Renting is growing despite the scarcity of vehicles

Date:

At the start of the year, marked by energy costs and the ongoing microchip crisis, this financing increased by 8.46%

2022 will not be easy for the automotive sector. Registrations fell 9.66% in the first quarter of the year due to rising energy and raw material costs, the ongoing microchip crisis and vehicle shortages. Despite this, leasing is a sector that has grown in registrations and that experienced a growth of more than 8% in the first quarter of the year compared to the results of the first quarter of 2021. Specifically, the rental fleet is increasing to 805,427 units, which have a weight in the total registrations of 23.46%. And it is worth highlighting the benefits of these figures for Spain: 25.3% of the vehicles registered by rental in the first quarter of 2022 left a Spanish factory.

All of this data shows that leasing companies “activate all management mechanisms to adapt to an environment that is constantly changing and not entirely predictable; although fortunately solutions have been found not to jeopardize the mobility requested by the customer,” explains José-Martín Castro Acebes, President of the Spanish Association of Vehicle Rentals (AER). “But our conclusion is that, despite the difficulties at the moment, the position of leasing as a future trend is good,” he adds.

In terms of alternative propellants, 7,263 units of the different electrified modalities (pure electric, extended range, petrol plug-in hybrid and diesel plug-in hybrid) were registered for rental in the first four months of 2022, representing the 10.63 % of total rental registrations and a growth of 41.9% compared to the April 2021 data. The weight that this sector contributes to the total registrations of electrified vehicles thus amounts to 28.6%.

On the other hand, alternative energy vehicles (electrified, hybrid, gas and hydrogen) accounted for 31.95% of total rental registrations in April 2022; while its penetration was 24.3% in April 2021. In this way and with the data in hand, the demand for these technologies is amplified through rental.

Reducing the environmental impact of means of transport is no longer a goal of the future and has become an urgent necessity of the present. It is a path on which all sectors of society must work together, but it is of course an issue that particularly preoccupies and preoccupies those of us who work in the automotive world. It is our duty to offer new and better options for sustainable mobility every day, because it is an action that benefits us all.

Today, many bets are made to promote new trends in mobility, in search of less polluting vehicles, but also different and new services that meet the demands and cover the transport needs of the population, without the need to pollute more.

One of the most active sectors in this process is rental, which has been promoting sustainable mobility for several years, and the figures prove it. According to data from the Spanish Rental Association, in 2021 almost 30% of vehicle rental registrations reached alternative energy sources. Of these, 28% belong to different modalities of electrified vehicles, which is a figure that is 5 times higher than that of 5 years ago when registrations of sustainable vehicles did not reach 5%. Today, electric vehicles are even one of the most attractive rental options because they offer benefits, such as the environmental label, but also their contribution to cleaner air and less noise pollution.

Leasing promotes technology and environmental-leading fleets that are affordable to all audiences, giving drivers access to electric vehicles, hybrids or vehicles with more efficient engines without incurring a significant financial outlay, simply by paying a monthly fee. Pay; a feature of renting that has led to the popularization of this mobility formula, not only for business, but also for private life.

It is about promoting a much more rational use of the vehicle, but also always going hand in hand with technology. When renting, even if the vehicle is not electric or has some other cleaner energy, it is committed to reducing pollution by having a fleet of vehicles that is always ahead of the curve.

The constant renewal of lease fleets means vehicles with advanced and efficient technology, which guarantees a lower impact on the environment by reducing carbon dioxide emissions into the environment. Therefore, renting is a very attractive option for all types of users, but also a solution for governments in their search for renewal of the vehicle fleet in our country, which is currently more than 13 years old.

There are many features that make renting an accelerator on the road a more sustainable means of transport, both for business and private use. There is no doubt that the present and the future of mobility pass this medium and long-term rental model that is getting stronger every day.
