Both manufacturers have announced a new agreement in the European light commercial vehicle market
Stellantis and Toyota (TME) have announced the extension of their current partnership with an agreement to jointly produce a new full-size commercial vehicle, which will be equipped with a 100% electric version. This new vehicle is the third body to be produced under the agreement and will complete the light commercial vehicle range by adding a large model to the compact and medium vehicles already on the market.
This new vehicle will be produced by Stellantis at the plants in Gliwice (Poland) and Atessa (Italy). This new model, scheduled for mid-2024, marks Toyota’s entry into the large light commercial vehicle segment.
“Operational excellence is by definition recognized in this expanded agreement,” said Carlos Tavares, CEO of Stellantis. The manager emphasized that “with this third successful partnership, Stellantis once again demonstrates its experience in the light commercial vehicle segment and its ability to develop battery technologies for 100% electric vehicles intended to meet a wide range of needs. This agreement strengthens our leadership in the EU30 for low-emission and light commercial vehicles, and brings us one step closer to achieving our Dare Forward 2030 goal of becoming the undisputed global leader in light commercial vehicles, in terms of technology, production, market share and profitability .
Matt Harrison, President and CEO of Toyota Motor Europe, said the Japanese company is pleased to extend this successful partnership with the introduction of a new full-size light commercial vehicle. It is an important addition and completes our light commercial vehicle range for Toyota’s European customers. This new light commercial vehicle, along with the Hilux, Proace and Proace City pick-up, will be key to achieving Toyota’s growth targets in its global light commercial vehicle offering, enabling Toyota to provide a mobility solution in all segments of the light commercial vehicle market.
The cooperation between Stellantis and TME started in 2012 with the production of Toyota’s medium light commercial vehicle produced at the Stellantis plant in Hordain (France), followed in 2019 by a compact light commercial vehicle produced at the Stellantis plant in Vigo (Spain).
