Designed to go faster and easier

The Honda CRF450R evolves again, without losing its reputation as a reference motocross machine

The Honda CRF450R has been the reference motocross machine since its introduction in 2002. The package has always focused on giving the rider – whether amateur or professional – total control through balance and agility. Plus, of course, it’s built with the quality, reliability and longevity that Honda has long been known for.

The experience of HRC riders from the FIM World MXGP, AMA Supercross and Pro Motocross championships has guided the direction of the development of the CRF450R. This makes the machine from 2023 easier and longer to carry. Revised frame stiffness provides increased spring rates and rear damping for improved control, without unwanted undue stiffness. Also, the grip of the front tires is greater and the 2023 machine (compared to the 2022) is more stable and faster cornering with better suspension feedback and better shock absorption.

A much stronger ‘bump’ at low revs was the aim of developing the 2023 model’s 449.7cc Unicam four-valve engine for faster and easier cornering. Peak torque remains exactly the same, but at 5,000 rpm there is an extra 10.7% to use higher gears and reduce fatigue throughout the stroke. The engine also starts to make more power in the low rpm range, with a 5% reduction at the top.

The muffler is now made from heat-treated aluminum to better support the rider’s boot. Tests to demonstrate resistance to deformation were performed with a weight of 2.2 kg at a distance of 600 mm; after 5 impacts there was very little deformation compared to the 2022 design. Most importantly, the material itself (and the heat treatment) ensures there is no weight gain.
