The brand celebrates this milestone with a special and exclusive model
In the summer of 2002, Volkswagen launched one of the sportiest compact models in the world: the first Golf R32. With its 177 kW (241 hp) 3.2-litre six-cylinder engine, it was the most powerful Golf Volkswagen had ever built. All-wheel drive, great dynamics and exclusivity of design and equipment determined the Golf segment technologically. The Golf R32 was an instant success and sold three times as much as expected. Since then, the fastest letter in the Volkswagen alphabet has delighted a community of fans around the world with the brand’s sportiest and most passionate models. To date, more than 260,000 Model Rs have been sold worldwide. Now Volkswagen R is celebrating the 20th anniversary of the Golf R with a commemorative model: the Golf R ’20th Anniversary’.
The Golf R is traditionally the most powerful model in Volkswagen’s most successful series of all time. Even the current Golf R, with its turbocharged 235 kW (320 hp)2 (TSI), differs in performance from the ‘classic’ eighth-generation Golf. But the ’20th Anniversary’ Golf R exceeds with its drive technology anything that has appeared on the market with the Golf label to date. With its 245 kW (333 hp) 2.0-litre four-cylinder turbo engine, it is 13 hp more powerful than the current Golf R, making it the most powerful ever.
