The negotiators of the European Parliament and the Twenty-seven reached an agreement on Tuesday to single USB-C charger from autumn 2024 to about fifteen portable electronic devices, including phones, tablets, digital cameras, headsets and game consoles
The formal adoption of the agreement by the European Parliament and Council plenary is scheduled for after the summer, allowing the new rules to enter into force 24 months later, in the fall of 2024
Likewise, the universal charger for laptops will also become mandatory, but this will be implemented later. The European institutions have provided for an additional period of 18 months from the entry into force of the standard to give the industry sufficient time to adapt.
One of the objectives of the new legislation is: reducing e-waste in the European Union and avoid consumers having to buy new cables and chargers with every device purchase.
According to EU data, between 11,000 and 13,000 tons of electronic waste are generated in the community area every year. According to his estimate, with the generalization of the single charger, Europeans will be able to save about 250 million euros on unnecessary charging solutions.
During Tuesday’s meeting, other novelties were also agreed, such as the obligation to clearly inform and label the charging options. In addition, the label should indicate whether the product comes with a charger.
