According to UNICEF children’s charity, tens of thousands of children in countries on the Horn of Africa are at risk of starvation. If the global community does not take immediate action, the death toll will skyrocket, UNICEF Southeast Africa Director Rania Dagash said in Geneva on Tuesday.
More than 1.7 million children in the countries of the Horn of Africa suffer from acute malnutrition, according to UNICEF. That is 15 percent more than five months ago.
The Horn of Africa includes Somalia, Ethiopia, Djibouti and Eritrea. Russia is blocking Ukrainian ports as part of its war of aggression. To date, Ukraine has been one of the largest wheat exporters. Ethiopia, Kenya and Somalia have so far been major buyers.

The war in Ukraine has further exacerbated the situation in East Africa. A two-year drought has severely affected local food production and drinking water supplies.
