With the new 408, Peugeot shows creativity through an unprecedented fastback body
The Peugeot 408 stands out at first sight for its dynamic fastback body and its unmistakable design, but also for an approach that distances itself from all known categories. The feline pose is typical of the brand’s models. The lines are muscular and the grille, painted in body color to match the front end, is accentuated by the new Peugeot emblem with a lion’s head. The inverted cut of the rear bumper surprises and gives the profile a strong appearance.
The new Peugeot 408 exudes solidity thanks to the large wheels with a diameter of 720 mm and the iconic 20-inch wheels with a disturbing geometric design. At the front, the fang-shaped light signature integrates the 408 perfectly into the Peugeot family, as do the three-claw LED rear lights.
Measuring 4.69 m long on a 2.79 m wheelbase, the new model offers remarkable space in the second row, with 188 mm knee room. The luggage compartment is also generous with a capacity of 536 litres, expandable to 1,611 liters when the rear seat backs are folded down. Its height is 1.48 m, which allows the drawing of a fine and elegant body. This achieves the best aerodynamic efficiency.
The engine range of the Peugeot 408 includes two plug-in hybrid versions with 180 and 225 hp and a 130 hp petrol version. All three engines will be offered with an EAT8 eight-speed automatic transmission. A 100% electric version is launched a few months later. Efficiency was central to the development of the Peugeot 408, as the combination of efforts in aerodynamics, weight reduction (from 1,396 kg) and low-emission engines allows the vehicle to boast a remarkably low average energy consumption (low homologation), both for the hybrids and for the 130 hp petrol version.
