This is the ID Aero, Volkswagen’s electric sedan

Date:

The sedan, with 620 kilometers of autonomy, will arrive first in China and in 2023 in Europe and North America

The sixth member of Volkswagen’s electric ID family will be a sedan of almost five meters in length. The newly unveiled ID Aero will arrive in China first, but will be launched in Europe and North America from 2023. The strong points with which he plays are a lot of interior space and a very low aerodynamic coefficient: 0.23.

This is one of the goals of every electric vehicle engineer, as air resistance is one of the main enemies of the performance and autonomy of these models. Almost all elements work together for this: from the door handles, the rear-view mirrors or the wheels inspired by aircraft turbines.

Thanks to this, and added to its 77 kWh battery, the ID Aero can reach 620 kilometers of autonomy. This is linked to the platform used by the entire ID family: the electrical modular architecture from the German consortium MEB.

The vehicle’s propellant, for which power data is not yet available, will be placed on the rear axle, giving it a pleasant driving experience, which will feature the latest developments in driver assistance systems. Volkswagen wants to set benchmarks not only in the field of electric mobility, but also in the field of digital customer experience, vehicle software and autonomous driving.

China has become the main internal market and electricity competition is fierce. As part of its Accelerate strategy, the ID Aero is designed to increase its market share so that by 2030 half of the brand’s sales will be zero-emissions (this penetration will be 70% in Europe).

Stephan Wöllenstein, CEO of VW Group China: “These are exciting times for the brand in China. Following on from the ID.4, ID.6 and ID.3, we are now introducing the fourth series of fully electric models with the fully ID Aero saloon. This shows that we aspire to a leading position in this market, but also in Europe and North America.”

In fact, there will be two different versions of the electric sedan in this market, one for each joint venture in the country. Western markets will receive only one by 2023, which will be built at the German factory in Emdem, a site that has invested more than $1 billion since 2018 to transform it into an EV hub.
