Kia revolutionizes the design of the new Niro, now more efficient

Date:

The second generation of the Niro is now available to order and deliveries in Europe are scheduled for Q3 2022

Kia launches the second generation of one of its bestsellers, the Niro, which is now offered under the same image
three completely different drive systems, but looking for maximum efficiency. This means that you can choose between an electric hybrid (HEV), a plug-in hybrid (PHEV); or 100% electric, with a range of up to 460 km (WLTP). And it is already available to order and deliveries in Europe are planned for the third quarter of 2022.

The HEV variant delivers a maximum power of 141 hp when Kia’s Smartstream 1.6 GDI petrol engine is combined with the 32 kW permanent magnet synchronous electric motor. The PHEV version, whose electric motor reaches 62 kW, offers a maximum power of 183 hp and an electric range of up to 65 km, enough for most daily trips.

In the PHEV, the intelligent ‘Green Zones’ propulsion mode (urban areas or roads near schools or hospitals) is very curious, which automatically selects electrical energy in selected areas, taking the location of the navigation system and driving patterns as a reference . In these areas, the vehicle automatically switches to electric propulsion to eliminate exhaust emissions. The driver can also intervene in the mode if he registers certain addresses at which he wants to eliminate emissions; for example, near your home or office.

Note that one of the advantages of the new Niro HEV and PHEV is a maximum braked towing capacity of 1,300 kg. For those who want to combine adventure and zero emissions, the Niro EV offers a braked towing capacity of 750 kg.

At 4.42mm long, 1.82mm wide and 1.57mm high, the new Niro improves cab proportions and storage capacity. With the rear seats folded, the load capacity thus reaches 1,445 liters in the HEV, 1,342 in the PHEV and 1,392 in the electric. A handy 20 liter case adds an extra piece of storage space for those who opt for the e-Niro.

As with the electrification offer, the environment has also been taken into account in the cab. The ceiling covering is made from recycled wallpaper; door panels are finished with VOC-free paint; the seat cover is made of vegan polyurethane leather and contains Tencel material from eucalyptus trees; the boot lid is made from 75% recycled fibres. These sustainable elements create an interior that respects the environment, with natural finishes that are pleasant to the touch.

In terms of exterior aesthetics, it now exhibits a determined and eye-catching look, a much-needed aesthetic appeal in the CUV segment. The front of the new Niro showcases the latest evolution of Kia’s trademark ‘Tiger Face’, which now extends to the front wings. The windshield features a unique double-layer design with the upper and lower sections mirroring each other for a sense of visual harmony. Angular ‘Heartbeat’ daytime running lights add to the contemporary look, while prominent lower front and side guards enhance the vehicle’s robust character.

The only thing you can distinguish between the 100% electric version of the PHEV and the HEV is a closed two-tone grille and an exclusive side protection in steel gray. The e-Niro has also received specific treatment for the lower grille and bumper, as well as specific 17-inch alloy wheels. The power outlet is conveniently located in the center of the front.

In profile, simple character lines lead to a bold C-pillar, one of the most striking design elements of this new model. In fact, Kia offers different colors for this area that contrast or complement the body color, depending on the chosen trim level and powertrain chosen.
