Land Cruiser: 70 years of the iconic off-roader’s history

Date:

Available in more than 190 countries around the world, it has built an iron-clad reputation as one of the strongest and most reliable 4x4s

Durability, reliability and the maximum capacity to take owners where they need to go and back. These are the key distinguishing features of Toyota’s 4×4 range, which is celebrating its 70th anniversary this year. It all started in 1951 when the Toyota Jeep BJ was born, eventually the first generation of Toyota’s great off-roader, the Land Cruiser.

Toyota’s dedication to 4×4 traction vehicles dates back to 1951, when the first off-road model was launched under the Toyota Jeep BJ name, and years later would morph into what we know today as Land Cruiser. For 70 years, Toyota has been developing and perfecting its off-road range to become the most complete and versatile on the market.

The Toyota Hilux and Toyota Land Cruiser are two vehicles with true 4×4 capability. While both have the same 150 kW/204 hp 2.8D engine, they maintain their differences. For example, the Toyota pick-up offers circulation in 4×2, 4×4 or 4×4 mode with reduction according to each need, while the all-terrain vehicle always circulates with permanent four-wheel drive. Two models with qualities that make them a reference for their behavior in the field.

Highlander Electric Hybrid and RAV4 Electric Hybrid are SUV vehicles with electric hybrid motorization and an intelligent all-wheel drive system —intelligent All-Wheel Drive (AWD-i) —. The first has seven seats in a 4.96 meter long body and an efficient 4th generation electric hybrid drive system with 182 kW / 248 hp. While the second, the fifth-generation RAV4 electric four-wheel drive variant, stands out for its excellent response both on and off the tarmac thanks to the AWD-i system and Trail Mode, with its 2.5-litre Dynamic Force engine and 222 hp.

Toyota’s most iconic 4×4 celebrates its 70th anniversary with a redesigned 2.8D 150 kW / 204 hp engine, new security systems and more connectivity options. Through all these developments, Toyota’s legendary 4×4 will continue to set the benchmark and remain the leader in its segment thanks to the quality, durability and reliability that have characterized it since the first generation came on the market in 1951.

Priced from €40,000 with a three-door body and from €43,100 with a five-door body (all prices), the Land Cruiser 2021 presents the new 150 kW / 204 hp 2.8D engine as a great novelty. This new engine, 27 hp more powerful than the previous one fitted by Land Cruiser (177 hp), features Stop & Start, which improves consumption and emissions, and can be combined with a six-speed manual or an automatic gearbox of the same number of relationships.

The new Land Cruiser is now available in the official network of Toyota Spain dealers in 3- or 5-door body styles and with a choice of five trim levels: NX, GX, VX, VXL and LIMITED. The first of them (NX) is homologated as a vehicle of category N1 and as a van and, together with GX, is the best piece of equipment, a strong and resistant 4×4 capable of overcoming any terrain problem.

VX, VXL and LIMITED, especially the last two, are aimed more at those customers who are looking for an SUV with a robust and impressive image, with the best off-road capabilities and excellent equipment, as well as a spacious cabin and space, made with high quality materials.
