The DGT will monitor the use of alcohol and drugs while driving this week

Date:

The agency, according to the toxicological analysis of 90% of fatalities in traffic accidents in 2021, indicates that 49.4% of those who died on the road had the presence of alcohol, drugs or psychotropic drugs detected, alone or in combination

As of today, Monday 8 August and until next Sunday 14 July, the Directorate-General for Traffic (DGT) is launching a new campaign in which
will intensify surveillance about the risk of the sum of alcohol and/or drug use and driving. The use of these substances is one of the main risk factors in road accidents, as stated in the 2021 report on toxicological findings in road accident victims, prepared by the National Institute of Toxicology and Forensic Sciences in collaboration with the National Road Safety Observatory and presented for several days. suffered by the Minister of Justice.

The report, which includes the toxicological analysis of 90% of fatalities in road accidents, indicates that 49.4% of those who died on the road in 2021 had the presence of alcohol, drugs or psychotropic drugs detected, alone or in combination and that, in addition, 75% of these positive drivers had very high blood alcohol levels, equal to or greater than 1.2 g/l, which correlates with
degrees of intoxication very severe.

For this reason, with the aim of making progress in the prevention of traffic accidents, the agents of the Civil Guard Traffic Group (ATGC) will intensify for a week the checks on this risk factor that causes almost a quarter (24%) of fatal accidents. . For this purpose, various checkpoints are set up on all types of roads and at any time of the day, with the aim of preventing people who have used alcohol or drugs from entering the road.

In addition, to discourage its consumption while driving on all types of roads, Traffic has invited municipalities with more than 25,000 inhabitants to participate in the campaign, setting up checks in their respective urban areas.

Therefore, the DGT once again urges us to remember that the only safe percentage is 0.0%, because even if the blood alcohol level remains within the allowable ranges, our risk of causing an accident may increase. In addition, 0.0% is the rate, both in blood and in exhaled air, to be respected by underage drivers driving a vehicle after the reform of the Road and Road Safety Act came into effect last March.

Although the amount of alcohol behind the wheel must always be absolute zero, Spanish law allows a maximum level of 0.5 grams per liter in the blood (or 0.25 mg/l of exhaled air), except for novice or professional drivers . drops to 0.3 (0.15). And anyone who exceeds the permitted limits should know that from 0.6 mg/l of alcohol in the air or 1.2 g/l of blood you commit a crime punishable by jail time.
