A shocking moment for a 26-year-old combine operator in Murtal: When the man was harvesting in a field on Wednesday afternoon, he suddenly saw clouds of smoke at the back of the machine. He tried to put out the fire himself and was taken to hospital with suspected smoke inhalation.
A 26-year-old from the Deutschlandsberg district was working with a combine harvester in a field in Pöls-Oberkurzheim (Murtal district) early Wednesday afternoon when he suddenly noticed the smell of smoke in the driver’s cab. As he noticed right away, smoke was rising from the rear of the combine.
Western Styria informed the emergency services and in the meantime tried to extinguish the fire itself. The volunteer fire brigades in Pöls and Fohnsdorf quickly brought the fire under control. The 26-year-old driver was taken to the LKH Murtal with suspected smoke poisoning.
The cause of the fire has not yet been fully determined, according to police. The fire is believed to have started from the heat and dust from threshing. The extent of the material damage has not yet been determined.
