It had to happen like this: The Reitmayr family in the Innviertel in Upper Austria built a stork’s nest in their garden and two animals promptly hatched. And because storks are said to bring good luck to babies, Mrs Reitmayr is now pregnant too.
A beautiful bird’s nest is enthroned on a twelve meter high mast in the garden of the Reitmayr family in St. Florian am Inn. Two young white storks have made themselves comfortable in it. “We were able to save her from certain death,” says owner Thomas Reitmayr (51). Both storks came from another nest in which five eggs had been laid. “Unfortunately, a pair of storks can only feed two to three young. After all, these animals need a kilo of meat a day.”
Inspired by a children’s book
In the family’s park-like garden there is also a 700 square meter pond with frogs. This pond inspired the writer Tanja Reisinger from Schardenberg – she is a friend of the Reitmayrs – to write the children’s book “Paul, the frog with the wide mouth”.
“There is also a stork in her story, which is described in a funny way. That gave us the idea to really get storks here,” says Reitmayr. A mast was erected with an excavator and the nest was designed. The hatched young storks were raised professionally and have found their home in the nest.
Offspring also among humans
“Our 3,500 square meter garden is ideal for them, as the Inn meadows and a bird sanctuary are right next door,” emphasizes the 51-year-old. Kingfishers and kestrels have also discovered the area themselves. “Of course we hope to have more offspring. They usually settle where others already nest or have nested.”
In any case, the young storks brought good luck: “Katharina, my wife, is expecting our third child on September 3.”
