NATO thinks war will drag on and calls for heavy weapons to be sent to Ukraine

Date:

The Atlantic Alliance understands that the war in Ukraine has entered a “critical phase” and believes it is time to step up shipments of weapons and defensive systems to Ukraine.

The NATO has been open to send heavy weapons to Ukraine for the first time since the beginning of the conflict in Eastern Europe, given the possible resurgence of the Russian invasion and because he fears that the war could drag on in the long run.

At the meeting of the Allied Foreign Ministers this Wednesday, the Secretary-General, Jens Stoltenberginfluenced that Kiev “urgently” needs more military support before the new phase in which the war in Ukraine begins, with the regrouping of Russian troops and the possible offensive against the Donbas region.

“It is important that the Allies are ready to bolster aid to Ukraine with both heavy and light systems. This is having an effect on the ground every day,” he stressed, when asked whether NATO will send tanks to Ukraine. .

The former Norwegian Prime Minister has championed the shipment of anti-tank weapons, air defense systems and various advanced weapon systems. “The whole of what the Allies are doing is significant and includes light and heavy systems,” he said.

All this in the context of a war NATO predicts will drag on and that will force Europe and North America to be ready to continue their military, financial and humanitarian efforts.

NATO’s political leader has emphasized that allies must: maintain support for Ukraine, enforce sanctions and strengthen its own defence in light of the “threat” that Moscow represents after Vladimir Putin “showed his willingness to resort to violence to achieve his objectives”.

Members of the Atlantic Alliance will discuss the situation in Ukraine this Wednesday at the first meeting of allies since the announcement of the mass murder of civilians on the outskirts of Kyiv.
