After more than 30 years, US police have identified a suspect in a string of murders. The man, who died in 2013, is believed to have murdered three women in the US states of Kentucky and Indiana between 1987 and 1989, police said Tuesday. A fourth woman was raped in 1990 in Indiana. For decades, police searched for the so-called “I-65 killer” — the murders took place along Interstate 65 at several motels.
Trace through DNA
Genealogical research has now led to identification. According to police, DNA traces were uploaded to genealogy platforms in order to find the perpetrator with the help of relatives. A match has been made between the suspected suspect and a family member. The chance that the man who died in Iowa at age 68 is the perpetrator is 99 percent.
The man already had an extensive criminal record and committed numerous crimes between 1963 and 1998.
