According to the government there, the number of Russian immigrants to Israel has risen sharply. More than 20,000 people came from Russia between January and July, with a sharp increase from February to March.
While about 700 Russians came to Israel in February, by March there were already more than 3000 immigrants. Under Israeli law, anyone with at least one Jewish grandparent has an immediate right to naturalization. In total, about 600,000 people in Russia meet these requirements.
Between January and July, according to statistics, 20,000 came to Israel. In comparison, in all of 2019, just under 16,000 Russian citizens moved to the country in the Middle East.
Moscow office closed
So far, they have been able to get help from the Moscow office of the organization “Jewish Agency for Israel”, which supports Jews in their emigration to Israel. However, in July, the Russian Ministry of Justice requested the dissolution of the facility. Violations of Russian data protection law were cited as the reason. However, Israel’s Diaspora Affairs Minister Nachman Shai suspects the Kremlin was reacting to the country’s stance on Ukraine. Israel supports the government in Kiev with humanitarian aid.
