The Viennese travel around the world for 4 euros a day

Date:

Once in a lifetime, the big journey starts without any time pressure. Two young Viennese have been fulfilling a dream shared by many for four months. The special thing: the couple also avoids inflation at home and spends only two euros per day and person. But they don’t just pay attention to the budget – the two also live sustainably.

Bernhard Endlicher and his girlfriend Alexandra Menz are both 22 years old. But instead of continuing their studies or embarking on a career, the couple wants to really enjoy their freedom first – and travel almost the entire world. However, since neither of them come from a wealthy household, they came up with the idea of a low-budget trip around the world. It should also be possible to travel through different countries with a few euros a day and largely with the help of others, or so the idea goes.

Environmental friendliness is in the foreground
The two, who also regularly document their journey under the name hitchikingdiary on the Instagram and YouTube platforms, have been on the road for four months. In April, the couple left Vienna, so far they have covered more than 20,000 kilometers. However, anyone who thinks that the distances are covered by plane, train and the like is wrong. “It’s important for us to travel as environmentally friendly as possible,” they report. The Viennese therefore travel most routes as hitchhikers.

Restaurants give away almost all meals
In general, the focus is on sustainability: about two euros per day and person is available. You sleep in your own tent or with friendly locals who offer a roof over your head. What is eaten is what restaurants would otherwise throw out late at night. “They’re usually happy to give us the food,” confirmed that even the throwaway society can stumble on a trip around the world.

Sailing the Atlantic and Pacific Ocean
The young hitchhiker duo is currently returning to Western Europe from Georgia via Turkey. Azerbaijan did not allow travelers into the country because of fear of monkey pox. The further plans? Back to Vienna for a short stop before sailing across the Atlantic from Portugal in November and then from southern Argentina to Alaska.

The Pacific also has to be crossed by sailing before Bernhard and Alexandra cross Southeast Asia. In three to four years, the journey should be over – as desired. And hopefully not too much pressure on their budgets.
