ÖBB withdrew the application – From December: Westbahn may drive to Innsbruck

Date:

After the ÖBB withdrew an application to check the balance in traffic, the private Western Railway is now officially allowed to travel to Innsbruck. The trip is expected to start in December.

The application, submitted by ÖBB Personenverkehr AG, asked for an examination of the economic balance of their traffic. This has now been withdrawn, the Rail Control Commission has announced. This concludes the procedure before the Commission and the Westbahn can leave for Tyrol from 11 December.

“Every bid positive”
As an ÖBB spokesperson made clear, it was felt that the application should be made for legal reasons. “We wanted to be on the safe side.” But that turned out to be irrelevant, because a legal review showed that this was not necessary. Hence the withdrawal of the application at the railway control. For ÖBB, “any offer that provides more public transport is positive”.

Timetable from September
Three trips per day and direction are planned for the Westbahn, media reports said. In addition to the old stop in Salzburg, stops in Kufstein and Wörgl are also planned. More detailed information will be available from mid-September, when ticket bookings will also be activated. Talks are currently being held with the Verkehrsverbund Tirol (VVT) about ticket recognition, according to Ines Volpert, press spokeswoman for Westbahn. Whether VVT tickets are also valid for Westbahn trains remains to be seen.
