What started as a robbery of a 22-year-old must turn into dangerous scenes on Thursday afternoon in Vienna-Margareten. When a 20-year-old suspect was arrested by police after his escape, he tried to take the gun from a police officer.
The alleged perpetrator from Syria had chosen a 22-year-old man as the victim, whose necklace had caught his attention. He spoke to his victim about the jewelry, entered into a conversation with them, but suddenly struck: The suspect tore the chain from the 22-year-old’s neck and ran away with his loot.
Immediate search successful
The victim alerted the police and an immediate search should be successful moments later. Agents of Margareten’s town command were able to detain the suspect at Pilgramgasse around 3 p.m.
When the suspect was arrested, “he attempted to snatch an officer’s service weapon from its security holster,” police spokesman Christopher Verhnjak reported Friday. However, he failed to do so. The suspected perpetrator was overpowered.
