A video of Russian military vehicles at the Zaporizhzhya nuclear power plant sparks tensions

Date:

In recent days, Ukraine and Russia have blamed each other for carrying out a series of attacks on facilities

A video analyzed by the US network ‘CNN’ and the newspaper ‘The New York Times’ shows the presence of Russian military vehicles in the facilities of the Zaporizhzhya nuclear power plant. In particular, they are located in a turbine room connected to one of the reactors of the nuclear power plant, the largest on the continent, which has been controlled by Russian forces since March. Each turbine hall – there are six in total – is connected to and built into a large building that houses a nuclear reactor.

The images had been circulating on social networks for several days, but it wasn’t until this Friday that the US media geolocated them and certified their authenticity. However, it is not known when they were recorded. In any case, Moscow confirms that the military presence is solely related to maintaining security in the installations.

In the sequence you will see up to five trucks, one of which has the ‘Z’ symbol painted in favor of the invasion. Next to them are some infrastructures that resemble tents. According to ‘CNN’ it is not clear whether these structures belong to the Russian army or have any connection with the work of the factory itself.

The video comes at a time of maximum tension around the nuclear power plant. Moscow and Kiev accuse each other of carrying out a series of attacks on the factory, which could cause a global catastrophe. United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres has repeatedly warned, most recently on Thursday, that both sides are “playing with fire” and that an attack on the facilities would be “suicide”.

The installations, located in the city of Enerhodar, were connected to the Ukrainian electricity grid via three pipelines before the war. When the Russians occupied it, they disconnected two of them, posing a great danger because if the system is shut down permanently, the installations would be exposed.

“There are reports that the Russian occupiers are planning to shut down the operation of the reactors and cut off the supply lines of the Ukrainian energy system,” the Ukrainian company Energoatom said on Telegram on Friday. According to this operator, the Russian military is looking for supplies for a number of diesel-based generators that will supposedly start operating after the reactors are shut down, and they have also restricted personnel access to the site.

According to the US ‘think tank’ Institute for the Study of War, the video of the military trucks “may indicate that the Russian forces are preparing the conditions to provoke a provocation at the factory and change the information story to blame Ukraine.” giving every movement produced on the territory of the factory’.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, like Guterres, has called for demilitarization of the zone. A proposal the Kremlin describes as “unacceptable” because it believes it would make the plant “more vulnerable”.
