Storm Tragedies – How a storm plunged families into immense grief

Date:

The storm in Austria caused many fatalities: two girls died tragically in Carinthia, and three hikers in Lower Austria were also killed when trees were uprooted. Only a few narrowly escaped a tragedy, including a boy from Wolfsberg, Carinthia, who probably owed guardian angels to the fact that he was not hit by a tree.

The shock in the Carinthian community of St. Andrä is deep. A day after the horrific storm that reportedly killed three-year-old Christina and eight-year-old Eva from the Lavant Valley on Thursday from falling trees, it must now become clear how the tragedy at the swimming lake could have happened in the first place.

report prepared
Experts were instructed by the Klagenfurt prosecutor’s office to inspect the area and the trees on it and check for possible rotten branches or other pre-existing instabilities. “We kept a tree register and regularly checked and cared for the green plants,” assures Maria Knauder, the mayor of St. Andrä.

Blessing in disguise
The 13-year-old Moritz from Wolfsberg must have had several guardian angels. On Thursday, as so often, he went fishing with two 15-year-old friends on Lake St. Andrä. “Since we had an evening appointment, I told Moritz that I would be picking him up at the lake at 3:00 pm and that he should be ready on time,” says his mother Roswitha Haspitz, adding: “His fishing tent was right under one of the large trees that had been uprooted and fallen. If he had stayed late into the afternoon as usual, my son would have been buried under it!”

Hospitalized victims for it
But even in Lower Austria’s Mostviertel, the shock is great after the tragic death of three hikers. “Until shortly before their departure, we sat comfortably with the women in our mountain hut. Shortly afterwards, three of the six friends were dead,” said Marianne Buber, the milkmaid of the Herrenalm, who still cannot believe the tragedy.

The later victims – Marianne W. (54) and her companion Sonja W. (52) and 57-year-old Eva H. – had told her that they had left very early in the morning for a hiking trip on the Dürrenstein. Shortly after they left, fate tore them from the middle of their lives and the women were killed by a tree.

A tragic detail: one of the murdered Lower Austrians was only married a few weeks ago.
