After the armed attack on a Sparkasse branch in Kufstein, Tyrol, on Thursday, there is still no trace of the perpetrator. The LKA researchers continue to hope for useful information from the public. This was the tenth bank robbery within a year in Tyrol and thus the continuation of a scary series.
Shortly before 11:30 am on Thursday, a masked perpetrator, armed with a gun, marched into the Sparkasse branch in Kufstein. The criminal threatened the employees with a gun and demanded cash in English.
Alarm search failed
The perpetrator then ran out of the bank and fled on foot. An alarm search was started. The police helicopter also circled above the fortress town in the Tyrolean lowlands. All measures were unsuccessful. The shooter was able to go into hiding.
The investigation was also in full swing on Friday. “However, the perpetrator is still on the run,” explained lead investigator Larissa Gossner of the Tyrolean State Criminal Investigation Department when “Krone” asked. To track down the bank robber, we still hope for useful information or suspicious perceptions from the population.
Tenth bank robbery on ‘anniversary’
The grisly series of bank robberies continued in Tyrol. This started on November 28, 2023 in Kufstein – exactly one year ago and in the same city where the last coup took place. At that time, a Volksbank was hit. The recently attacked savings bank was also the scene of an armed coup in January.
Multiple suspects identified
In addition to the banks in Kufstein, the institutions in Innsbruck were particularly affected in the past twelve months. Several suspects have now been arrested. For example, according to the Public Prosecution Service, a duo arrested in early July after a bank robbery in Innsbruck were also suspected of being responsible for two more robberies in March and April at bank branches in the capital.
At the beginning of September, a strange coup took place when an initially unknown perpetrator robbed a ‘cashless’ bank on Mitterweg in Innsbruck. At the end of October, a Russian was identified as a suspect.
