It is bustling in the border municipalities of Burgenland. The increasing number of pick-ups right outside the door and the unscrupulous methods of the smuggling mafia are heating up emotions. A former politician is directly affected by this in his hometown.
The districts of Neusiedl am See and Oberpullendorf have been hotspots of illegal migration for months. As reported, 2,587 refugees were stranded in Burgenland in the first week of August and 2,567 in the second week.
Residents restless
“We are currently receiving more calls from concerned citizens from the border towns than ever before. Given the human tragedies unfolding before their eyes and the inaction of the responsible federal government, many are bursting at the seams,” SPÖ club president Robert Hergovich said of the population’s dismay. By comparison, where 5,154 refugees were registered in the past two weeks alone, in 2021 there were a total of 19,938.
The situation at the border is tense. “Apparently it’s easier to lock up an Austrian football legend than it is to deal with the human trafficking mafia with all your might,” one caller commented sarcastically.
Ex-politician hit
Former Defense Minister Norbert Darabos in Croatia’s Minihof and neighboring Nikitsch has also been directly affected by the influx of refugees. Police and military are overloaded, he says. “Lately, law enforcement officers have been dealing with asylum seekers all night instead of being able to do their actual work.”
According to Darabos, 80 percent of the resources are used by the focus on migration, but not by policing. “After a knife attack in Deutschkreutz, many residents are restless, nobody dares to go out at night.”
Hungarian officials beat migrants
Many migrants also complain about violence. There are reports of incidents of police officers in Hungary brutally beating refugees, as insider circles have learned. “It has also been heard that certain officials in Hungary have deliberately let migrants through to Austria to get rid of them,” Darabos criticizes. His call: “The EU must act consistently!”
