Climate activists from the “Last Generation” group set fire to an empty pram in front of the Bregenzer Festival Hall on Sunday evening at the end of this year’s festival. They demanded a statement from Chancellor Karl Nehammer and Vice Chancellor Werner Kogler that no new oil and gas projects should be allowed to proceed. They also demanded 100 km/h on the autobahns as an immediate measure.
The “Last Generation” referred to the storms of recent days in which five people – including two children – died in Austria. According to her, the politicians remained inactive in the face of the climate crisis. Instead, they enjoyed a summer vacation.
“What we see today are the consequences of 1.2 degrees global warming. The scenarios that climate science has been desperately warning about for decades are now a reality,” said Martha Krumpeck, co-founder of Austria’s “Last Generation”.
There are only a few years left before the climate emergency finally spirals out of control. Civilian resistance will continue “until the government introduces sensible cost-cutting measures, such as 100 km/h on the motorway”.
