The “Nordmole”, a lighthouse in the German town of Bremerhaven on the North Sea, has been in need of renovation for years, but now the problem has become acute. The tower collapsed last week and has been at a dangerous angle ever since. The dismantling of the crooked molten tower has now started.
In case of high water pressure, the protected red dome must first be detached from the masonry of the tower, the spokesman for port company Bremenports announced on Monday. He commissioned an external company for this. According to the spokesperson, this is a “tried procedure” that requires conversion work on the tower.
Plan B: Make the tower fall
If it is possible to detach the dome, it will be removed during the week. If the plan doesn’t work, those responsible want the tower to fall over in a controlled manner.
In the night of Thursday, the northern mole, on which the tower stands, was lowered. Since then, the approximately 20 meter high tower has stood on a slope.
