Unstoppable fire – Beirut: More grain silos collapsed

Date:

The Lebanese government wants to tear it down but keep the people as a symbol of the devastating explosion in August 2020 that claimed more than 190 lives. But the remaining grain silos in the port of Beirut may soon collapse on their own. Only parts of the southern block have been standing since Tuesday, the northern block is now history.

A plume of white smoke rose over the area Tuesday morning, as seen in videos posted on social media. There was a pungent smell in the air. In recent weeks, parts of the silos had already collapsed after the remaining grain was burned through fermentation processes. However, extinguishing work is not possible. Because the operation would be far too dangerous for the firefighters.

Investigations falter, reconstruction slow
The explosion detonated large quantities of the highly explosive chemical ammonium nitrate, which had been lying in the harbor for years without protective measures. The exact cause is still unclear. The official investigations falter because they are blocked by power struggles within the government, among other things. “Even if only one silo remains, it will always remind us to keep working for justice for the innocent victims,” said William Noun, a spokesperson for the families.

Reconstruction in the Lebanese capital is progressing slowly, mainly due to a lack of money. The country has been suffering the worst economic crisis in its history for nearly three years.
