Following an end to Russia’s war of aggression against Ukraine, which is currently unforeseeable, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyi says he will not run for re-election. Such an option would only be an option for him as long as the war continues.
“If the war continues: yes. “When the war is over: no,” he said in an interview published on Wednesday evening for the Romanian news site digi24. He added that he could not flee during the war against Russia.
Martial law does not allow elections
In accordance with the constitution, regular presidential elections would take place in Ukraine on March 31, 2024. Under the current martial law, which was imposed after the Russian invasion in February 2022, they are not allowed to be detained. The parliamentary elections originally scheduled for October this year have also been postponed indefinitely.
Actually only planned for one term
At the same time, there were repeated calls from various quarters – including from Western allies – for a change in the laws and for elections to be held, even in times of war. Zelenskyy has so far rejected this, partly given the lack of financing for an election in his country, which is dependent on foreign money.
The 45-year-old was elected Ukrainian head of state before the Russian invasion in 2019. At the time, he had already said that he would only run for one term, but he later did not rule out re-election.
