The group of Elkarrekin Podemos in the San Sebastian City Hall criticized this Tuesday that the Municipal government of Eneko Goia I wore two legislatures “takes a long time” on the possibility of a tourist tax in the city, and has considered: “urgently” the introduction of this tax measure, “as another measure that will, among other things, allow progress towards the reduction of tourism” in the capital Gipuzkoa.
Mayor Haizea Garay recalled in a statement that in its July 21 plenary session, the PNV-PSE board voted against the motion of the coalition to which it belongs, which “defended precisely the need to introduce a tourist tax, such as a fiscal instrument to achieve a fair redistribution of resources to meet the basic needs” of all residents of San Sebastian.
Along these lines, he pointed out that the proposal to introduce a tourist tax in the city is part of the previous legislature (2015-2019), and, “specifically, it is an initiative of the coalition that precedes us, the Irabazi Donostia Group, a coalition composed of Ezker Anitza-IU and Equo Berdeak”.
“Since then, we have been pushing for its implementation without the government of Goia having the will to go ahead with it,” insisted the mayor, recalling that in April 2019 they managed to persuade the municipal plenary to vote on the Basque to request the government’s approval of “a legal instrument that would allow the city council to levy a tourist tax and pay it into the municipal coffers, but nothing has happened in these four years”.
Faced with the impact of tourism in San Sebastián and in a context where “a reflection on the limits of natural resources and the accumulation models of the current system is essential”, Garay stated in the July plenary that the city council “is a plan to reducing tourism in the city is underway, as well as stopping allocating money to the promotion of tourism”.
