Does the tutoring company GoStudent have serious quality problems? A student in Vienna was massively sexually harassed online. The consequences were immense. The investigations are already underway.
It’s every parent’s nightmare – and it happened in lockdown. Like many families during this difficult time, Elias’s parents (name changed by the editor) wanted to support their son with private lessons. It is therefore not surprising that she chose a well-known online tutoring service, namely the celebrated tutoring start-up GoStudent, founded by Austrians. The platform has a value of three billion euros.
Tutor sent nude photos and videos
But there seems to be a dark side. Has growth gone too fast? The quality assurance in the selection of the teachers (as the teachers are called) is probably insufficient. Because the tutoring turned into serious sexual abuse, leaving the teenager in a serious life crisis. The public prosecutor’s office in Vienna is already investigating the tutor.
The 31-year-old tutor is said to have sent the underage student photos and pornographic videos. But that’s not all: he would also have pressured the student to let Elias send the teacher nude pictures of himself. If he refuses, the tutor threatened, he will receive no further help in the form of online tutoring. For weeks, the tutor constantly asked the teen to send pictures and videos of himself.
Top lawyer reported scandal
The consequences of the sexual abuse were immense: Elias had a severe relapse at school, developed anxiety and aggression, lost extreme weight, had suicidal thoughts and had insomnia. The parents were at their wits’ end and attributed the crisis to the pandemic and the lockdown. Until Elias confided in his nephew.
Top lawyer Norbert Wess has now reported the scandal. The Viennese lawyer does not believe that Elias is an isolated case. “If there are more victims, they should report to my office. As a father, it is a personal concern of mine to help any victims.”
When asked, the “Krone” received no response from GoStudent.
