Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has described his country’s defensive struggle against Russian aggression in undiplomatic terms. Later in his evening video speech, Zelenskyy thanked for the international support Ukraine had received at the forum to repatriate Crimea, which had been annexed by Russia in 2014. “Crimea is an indispensable part of our state,” he said. Ukraine will liberate the Black Sea Peninsula and give its compatriots the freedom they deserve.
Sad Independence Day: “Please observe the curfew”
Ahead of Ukraine’s Independence Day on Wednesday, the president again called on citizens to exercise caution over fears of Russian attacks. The army and all government agencies tried to protect the population as much as possible. “Please respect the curfew. Watch for air strike signals!” Zelenskyy begged.
Russia: Prominent Kremlin critic arrested
Meanwhile, in Russia, Kremlin critic and ex-mayor of Yekaterinburg, Yevgeny Roisman, has been arrested for making statements about the war in Ukraine. Tass news agency reports that he is under investigation for “discrediting the Russian army”. Russia has repeatedly prosecuted activists who described or criticized the actions in the neighboring country as a war.
The Moscow government still calls the invasion of Ukraine a “special military operation” six months later.
