A deadly family drama erupted Tuesday in the North Carolina town of Winston-Salem. A mother kills her three children and then commits suicide.
Police, who were alerted at 11:45 a.m. local time because neighbors had heard shots fired. After gaining access to the locked house, emergency services found the bodies of the three children – two girls and a boy aged nine, twelve and fourteen – and the dead mother, who had shot herself after the crime.
Ethal Syretha Steele, 40, died of an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound, police said. According to her, the woman first shot and killed the youngest girl, nine-year-old Sakendra Syan. According to preliminary findings, the older girl, 12-year-old Sakenya Syretha, jumped up and screamed before being hit by two bullets.
Neighbors are shocked
Then the mother shot her son, Sakeno Shawn, they say. “I don’t know what prompted this murder in this neighborhood,” said Isaac Eshun, one of the shocked neighbors. “I really don’t know how to process what happened.”
