On Wednesday, an employee discovered a damaged safe filled with explosives at a scrap yard in Klagenfurt. A large contingent of police left.
The company employee made the strange discovery on Wednesday around 1.10 pm at the scrap depot in the St. Ruprecht district of Klagenfurt. “In a damaged safe that had been dumped with scrap metal, the man saw what looked like explosives and alerted the police,” a police spokesman said.
Dumped illegally long ago
Multiple police patrols went out to secure the site and extensively seal off the surrounding danger zone. Nearby buildings were also evacuated for safety reasons.
“The explosives are of a commercial nature and would have been illegally dumped in the vault a long time ago,” the official said. Until the evening, the explosives were gradually destroyed on site in a controlled manner by the harmless service. “That means, for example, professional burning or professional ignition of the explosives,” explains the police officer.
Undamaged detonating material was secured by the harmless service for later destruction. It is not yet clear where the explosives came from. The investigation is underway.
