Many delegations considered the Commission’s objectives to be “too ambitious and even unrealistic”, which is why the Spanish Presidency of the Council has pursued “realistic” and “balanced” objectives.
European Union ministers and industry agreed on Monday to call for a reduction in climate ambition compared to the European Commission’s proposal and to delay the application of the Euro 7 standard from 2025 to 2027 for cars and light vehicles and from 2027 to 2027. 2029 for trucks.
According to the text of the general approach, many delegations have considered the objectives proposed by the Commission “too ambitious and even unrealistic”That is why the Spanish Presidency of the Council has pursued “realistic” and “balanced” objectives.
This regulation aims reduce emissions of air pollutants of road transport, known as Euro 7, to support the industry’s transition to ‘clean’ cars by 2035.
The general approach reached by the Twenty-Seven gives the Spanish Presidency of the Council a mandate to enter into negotiations with the European Parliament, which will begin once the European Parliament has also adopted its position on the issue.
The Council’s position aims to: ‘balance’ between ‘realistic’ demands on vehicle emissions and additional investments for the industry, at a time when European car manufacturers are undergoing a transformation towards the production of zero-emission cars.
The general approach of the Twenty-seven therefore maintains the emission limits and test conditions that already existed in the previous standard (Euro 6) for private cars and vansand sets lower limits for Heavy vehicles compared to the previous scheme.
Euro 7 also contains a special provision about city buses to ensure consistency with the recently proposed 2030 zero emissions target for these vehicles and to set limits on particulate emissions from brakes and tires.
