Right-wing extremist Israeli Security Minister Itamar Ben-Gvir has called on all citizens of the country to purchase a firearm. His ministry has already started distributing weapons to civilians, he said.
Ben-Gvir’s call came after a knife attack on two police officers in Jerusalem on Monday. The 16-year-old attacker was shot after the knife attack at Herod’s Gate in the Old City, Israeli police said. According to the Magen David Adom rescue service, a 20-year-old Israeli woman was taken to hospital in critical condition and a 20-year-old man was slightly injured in the attack.
“This incident shows what I have been saying all along: arm yourself! The Ministry of National Security currently has numerous projects aimed at turning citizens into first responders. We have already set up more than 650 such teams. We are still in the early stages of distributing the weapons. Not everyone has received weapons yet,” said Security Minister Ben-Gvir, the leader of the Otzma Yehudit party.
Minister of Security: “This saves lives!”
Ben-Gvir explained that he believes that every citizen who is able to do so should also carry a weapon. “This saves lives! A year ago there were numerous discussions about distributing weapons to civilians. “Today everyone has understood that this saves lives,” said the Interior Minister, who is himself a radical settler in the West Bank area. A gun in a civilian’s hand can protect a house, an assault rifle can protect a larger building, Ben-Gvir continued.
Two commanders killed in the West Bank
Meanwhile, an Israeli special force deliberately killed three Palestinians during an operation in Tulkarem in the West Bank on Monday. According to Palestinian media reports, the suspects involved a commander of the Islamist Hamas and a commander of the Al-Aqsa Brigades. This is an armed group that has close ties to the Fatah of Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas. The identity of the third person was unclear.
