Fire alarm in Rietz – oven heated and house left behind: fire in Tyrol

Date:

Fire alarm on Sunday evening in Rietz in the Tyrolean Oberland: A fire broke out in the basement of an apartment building. A man had previously fired a furnace and then left the house. Another resident was awakened by a fire alarm.

Around 1 a.m., the resident living on the ground floor was awakened by a strong smell of smoke and a fire alarm. “The woman immediately informed her daughter-in-law on the first floor, who then noticed the fire in the basement of the apartment building,” the police said.

Police officers prevented worse
An emergency call was immediately made. A patrol quickly arrived, descended the smoky stairwell to the basement and conducted an initial firefighting operation. “With the help of fire extinguishers and a garden hose, the police managed to get the fire under control and eventually extinguish it,” the detectives said.

Embers came out of the furnace
The arriving fire service then carried out post-extinguishing work and ventilation of the building. What was the cause? According to the police, the resident who lived in the basement heated up a Swedish stove in the hallway around 11 p.m. and then left the house. “In the process, embers may have escaped from the combustion chamber and set fire to the carpet or firewood next to the stove.”

Fortunately no one was injured. The residential building is still habitable, the damage cannot yet be quantified.
